Pile Integrity Test

FPrimeC Solutions was engaged to provide Low Strain Pile Integrity Test in Saint John, New Brunswick. The Pile Integrity Test was part of the Quality Verification Engineering project on nearly 200 concrete caissons. The Problem

Deep foundation elements are largely inaccessible for direct inspection after construction. As a result, variations or deficiencies that may occur during pile installation or concrete placement cannot always be identified through visual inspection alone. Changes in pile geometry, material consistency, cross-sectional area, or internal continuity can affect the stress-wave response of a pile. Therefore, an efficient non-destructive testing program was required to evaluate a large number of piles and identify locations where further engineering review might be required. Low-strain PIT is designed to help evaluate pile integrity, continuity, approximate physical dimensions, and material consistency.

The Solution: Low Strain Pile Integrity Test

FPrimeC Solutions implemented a Low Strain Pile Integrity Testing program for more than 200 piles at the Saint John project.

The testing program was designed to provide independent quality verification through field measurements, interpretation of pile response, and engineering evaluation. The tests were performed accroding to the general specifications of the ASTM D5882, “Standard Test Method for Low Strain Impact Integrity Testing of Deep Foundations”.

The key objectives included:

  • Non-destructive evaluation of constructed piles
  • Verification of pile integrity and continuity
  • Screening for potential anomalies or significant changes in pile cross-section
  • Identification of unusual stress-wave reflections that could indicate construction-related irregularities
  • Evaluation of the consistency of pile response
  • Identification of piles requiring additional review or investigation
  • Engineering interpretation and reporting of test results
